Phil Mickelson Supports GOP Candidate for California Governor

Phil Mickelson, the celebrated three-time Masters champion, has made a noteworthy financial contribution to Steve Hilton, who is running for the governor of California as a Republican. This move is particularly significant, given that it’s been over two decades since a Republican has held the state’s highest office.

This support is somewhat unexpected for Mickelson, as his previous political contributions are quite minimal. Records from the Federal Election Commission show he made a notable donation way back in 1994—just a $700 contribution to former U.S. Representative J.D. Hayworth. Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be any other substantial donations made by Mickelson to candidates in California until now.

Hilton, who has a background as a businessman, author, and podcast host, seems to have caught Mickelson’s eye. Mickelson expressed his belief in Hilton’s potential to revitalize California, stating, “Steve Hilton can and will save California.” His comment specifically points to Hilton’s plans to roll back certain Democratic policies regarding climate and energy.

As it stands, Hilton has raised an impressive $6.2 million, positioning himself favorably against several Democratic contenders in the race to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom. His funds notably outstrip those of many of his rivals, only falling behind former mayors Antonio Villaraigosa and Matt Mahan.

Hilton publicly appreciated Mickelson’s backing and referred to it as a crucial part of his campaign’s momentum. “I’m so honored to have Phil’s support,” he remarked. They have discussed their shared affection for California and their aspirations to improve it under new leadership.

Moreover, Hilton has emphasized his belief that California has been hindered by “one-party rule” for far too long. He aims to restore the state’s traditional values of productivity and entrepreneurship, ideals he feels represent the nation as a whole. “This is more than just a state,” he added. “What California means to America is what America means to the world.” He said that a shift away from this one-party dominance is essential to move past the current challenges.

With the gubernatorial primary set for June 2nd, Hilton will be competing against a range of opponents, and the most successful candidates will progress to the general election in November. Early voting kicks off on May 4, according to state electoral updates.
