Philadelphia 76ers seen as serious competitor in LeBron James pursuit

Since LeBron James announced his intent to sign with a team during this offseason’s free agency, speculation has been rampant regarding where he might conclude his storied NBA career.

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as frontrunners, but it seems a third contender, the Philadelphia 76ers, is also in the mix.

This development comes from a July 2 report by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who noted during his segment on NBA Today that LeBron’s established connection with 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey—both represented by Klutch Sports, co-founded by LeBron’s business partner Rich Paul—could play a significant role in enticing LeBron to Philadelphia.

Windhorst indicated that LeBron and Maxey share a close friendship and have attended various events together. On top of that, LeBron reportedly has a solid rapport with 76ers center Joel Embiid, with whom he won a gold medal as part of Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Additionally, Philadelphia recently completed a trade with the Boston Celtics for Jaylen Brown on July 1, sending Paul George along with a couple of first-round and second-round picks to Boston in return for the five-time All-Star.

With Brown on their roster, the Celtics are already seen as strong contenders for the 2027 NBA Championship. If they manage to bring LeBron into the fold, they would only grow stronger.

While the 76ers are showing interest, it doesn’t guarantee that LeBron will end up there. Still, the strong bonds he has with key players on the team could influence his decision on where to go next.
