Philip Rivers Eyes NFL Coaching Role with the Bills

Though Philip Rivers’ return to playing might be winding down, it seems a coaching career in the NFL is coming into focus. At 44 years old, Rivers made a brief comeback in December, starting three games for the Colts after stepping away from the game for five years. Now, he has caught the attention of Bills head coach Sean McDermott, who, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, is giving Rivers serious consideration.

“One of the biggest stories this year is Philip Rivers back on the field. It’s surprising, honestly, but it might not be over yet,” Rapoport mentioned on “NFL Gameday Morning,” just before the NFC and AFC Championship Games.

Rapoport also confirmed that Rivers has recently interviewed in person for the head coaching position with the Bills. It’s a notable step, and it’s been understood that they are indeed taking this seriously.

During his interview, Rivers showcased his understanding of the role. Sure, he coached at the high school level, but he’s had a significant presence as a play-caller and leader throughout his career. He has strong connections in the coaching community, particularly with figures like former Colts coach Frank Reich, who is highly regarded. There’s also Gus Bradley, an assistant with the 49ers, who adds to Rivers’ network.

The Bills confirmed their meeting with Rivers as part of their search for a new head coach.

After retiring, Rivers took on the role of head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, which probably served as a solid introduction to coaching at a higher level.

Recent Performance and Coaching Aspirations

In his first NFL appearance since 2020, Rivers’ return saw the Colts go winless in three games while he threw for 544 yards, hitting four touchdowns but also tossing three interceptions.

The Bills’ search for a new head coach is ongoing. They have plans to meet with Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Wudinski and have previously talked to other candidates like former Giants head coach Brian Daboll and current Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Sean McDermott, who had been a long-standing coach for the Bills, was let go after a tough playoff exit against the top-seeded Broncos. Under his leadership since 2017, the Bills managed to secure 98 wins, marking them as one of the most successful teams in regular-season play. They have seen playoff appearances eight times during McDermott’s tenure, reaching the AFC Championship Game twice, but the Super Bowl has remained elusive since 1990-93 when they faced similar heartbreak in four consecutive appearances.
