Philip Rivers to Start Again for Colts in Week 16
Philip Rivers is set to lead the Colts once more in Week 16 as they work to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
The 44-year-old quarterback made his first start since 2020 during the Colts’ recent game against the Seahawks, marking his second consecutive outing under center.
“We didn’t bring him in to be a backup,” Colts coach Shane Steichen shared with the media.
This situation remains one of the more surprising narratives of the season, especially since Rivers returned from retirement to take the helm for the Colts, who have seen some challenges in their lineup. Former Giant Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, and backup Anthony Richardson is dealing with an eye socket injury.
Adding to the mix, third-string quarterback Riley Leonard is coping with a knee issue.
Rivers seemed to exceed expectations, throwing for 120 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during the game.
Steichen expressed his admiration for Rivers’ performance after such a considerable break. “There were certainly some uncertainties given his long time away from the field. But he handled himself well and put us in a position to compete in a tough environment. His leadership on the sidelines and ability to manage the game was truly impressive,” he noted.
In a Monday press conference, Steichen mentioned that Richardson has been cleared to start engaging in physical activities again, including weightlifting, running, and throwing.
This week, the 49ers will pose a formidable challenge as the Colts strive to keep their playoff hopes alive.
After the loss to the Seahawks, Rivers emphasized his team’s tenacity, stating, “We’ll scratch, fight, and claw against the Niners. It’s not just because I’m here; I know from experience that these teams always put up a fight until the end of the season.” He confidently promised that the team will give it their all for the next three weeks.
