Philippines shark attack leaves 2 tourists dead at dive site

The two tourists reportedly were killed by a Filipino shark after being washed into the undercurrent at a popular diving location.

The diver, identified as Ilia Pereguddin, 29, and Russian-born Maxim Melekhov, 39, was in an area off the coast of Verde, known for his vibrant marine life and corals, when he was transported to a group of attractive sharks on Thursday, according to the Viral Press.

“There was a strong current and the group was separated. The two who were with the Master Divers were able to return to the boat, but the other two were unable to resurface,” Airland Lapitan, captain of the Philippine Coast Guard, told Viral Press.

“It was hard to recover one of the divers as the sharks were circling around their bodies,” he added. “We believe that individuals were attacked by sharks because their right hand was missing.”

Pereguddin, who was found unconscious at the sea, was reportedly proclaimed he died upon arrival after being taken to a hospital in Batangas.

“Everything was so overwhelming and traumatized. We personally experienced strong currents on the left and right sides and strong waves on the surface,” local Diego Reyes, who crept in with Russian tourists, told Viral Press.

“It was really challenging to return to the group once you were separated. I hope the authorities can understand what actually happened to them. I would like to thank the Lord while keeping our group safe. Please rest in peace with the Russian divers,” he added.
