America 250: Jackie Robinson

In 1947, Jackie Robinson made history by breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, becoming the first African-American player in the modern era. His remarkable journey began that same year when he was named Rookie of the Year, and he earned a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

After a solid performance on Wednesday, the day following was quite rough for the Fox News cast. We narrowly lost the game between the Thunder and Spurs, and disappointingly, all the scoring in the Astros-Rangers game was concentrated in the first half, rather than the second, as we had hoped. Tonight, the Phillies face off against the Dodgers, which gives me a chance to bounce back.

The Philadelphia Phillies have experienced a significant turnaround this year. They started off as one of the weakest teams in the league but turned things around after they parted ways with their manager. There were quite a few reports of tensions between the coaching staff and players, which isn’t too surprising. Perhaps they are becoming more relaxed, or maybe interim manager Don Mattingly is implementing some new strategies. Whatever the case, the team now has a winning record and looks poised to compete in the National League again.

Tonight, they’ll have one of their top pitchers, Zach Wheeler, on the mound. Wheeler has been having an impressive season so far, with a perfect 4-0 record, a 1.67 ERA, and a 0.82 WHIP. While he may not lead the league in innings pitched—just 37.2, to be exact—his results have been stellar. He has thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings and the Phillies have won all six games he started. However, it’s worth noting that Dodgers hitters are batting .311 against him in 135 at-bats, with a good amount of that damage coming from Freddie Freeman and Miguel Rojas.

I haven’t had much to say about the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, mostly because there hasn’t been a lot of drama. They are performing as expected—16 games above .500 and one of the top teams in baseball, on track to defend their back-to-back World Series titles. Interestingly, they’ve managed to maintain the same record both at home and on the road: 18 wins and 10 losses.

Tonight, they look set to perform well at home with Justin Wroblewski on the mound. If there were any concerns about the Dodgers this season, especially with their pitching, bringing in a player like Wrobleski—who has a 6-2 record with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP—could pose some challenges for the Phillies. Wrobleski has struggled recently, allowing 14 earned runs in his last 19.2 innings. He had only allowed 19 earned runs all season until now, so perhaps the team is trying to make adjustments with him. The Phillies have faced him five times, managing four hits off him.

It’s not often you get the chance to beat the Dodgers at a line of -120 like tonight. But it’s not the best scenario. Wrobleski appears to be having a tough time lately, which could be mechanical or related to adjustments he hasn’t made yet. Wheeler doesn’t have an impressive history against Dodgers hitters, but maybe he can steer clear of Freddie Freeman, who has definitely had his number.

The Dodgers have won five in a row, while the Phillies recently took down the Padres in their last series. Both teams are on a hot streak. For Philadelphia, this game holds extra meaning since they lost to Los Angeles last year. A strong start for the Phillies with Wheeler on the mound could make all the difference.
