LOS ANGELES — Christopher Sanchez pitched six strong innings, Edmundo Sosa and Kyle Schwarber hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 on Tuesday night in a matchup of the National League’s top two teams.
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the earthquake’s epicenter was near Mettler, California, about 89 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
Phillies announcers said they didn’t feel it in their booth, but it was felt on the control track and in the press box at Dodger Stadium.
There was no notable reaction from the crowd of 47,150.
Sanchez (8-7) allowed one run, five hits, struck out two and walked one, preventing the Dodgers from achieving their three-game winning streak.
Schwarber’s two-out RBI single forced Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw (0-2) out in the fifth inning and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
After an Austin Hayes double, Kershaw worked the count to 0-2 for Brandon Marsh before feeding Schwarber a pass.
Kershaw, making his third start of the season, gave up one run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking none.
Dodgers relief pitcher Brusdar Graterol was forced to leave the game in the sixth inning with a right hamstring strain, a day after being removed from the 60-day disabled list.
The Phillies beat out his replacement, Brent Honeywell.
They added three more runs in the sixth inning.
Nick Castellanos hit an RBI single and Sosa added a two-run single to make it 4-0.
The Dodgers scored their first run in the sixth inning on a RBI grounder by Will Smith.
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning with runners on first and second, Shohei Ohtani came to bat with a chance to hit a tying single, but reliever Matt Straham induced a flyout to right field to end the inning.
Ohtani was hitless in four at-bats.
Teoscar Hernandez, last month’s Home Run Derby winner, hit his 25th homer off Jeff Hoffman in the eighth inning to put the Dodgers up 4-2.
But in the top of the ninth, Sosa hit a 0-2 ball from Honeywell, the leadoff batter, into the bottom row of right field stands to score.
Schwarber’s 24th home run hit the right field foul pole to extend the lead to 6-2.
Dodgers right fielder Andy Page was the game’s defensive standout in the seventh inning.
He caught a fly by J.T. Realmuto and threw to third base, where Kiké Hernández tagged out a sliding Bryce Harper to complete the inning-ending double play.
The Phillies lost their appeal of the call.
Dodgers slugger Freddie Freeman hit his 500th career double in the first inning.
