Phillies' Daniel Robert experiences heart issue

Medical Emergency for Phillies Pitcher

Daniel Robert, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, faced a significant health scare while training in Florida on Sunday morning.

While at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Robert experienced a cardiac event after finishing his first bullpen session since October. He was on the pitcher’s mound when the incident occurred.

Notably, Robert had previously dealt with a heart issue last October, prompting doctors to implant a cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in his chest over the winter. Reports indicate that the device activated as he came off the mound.

“I was right behind him when it happened,” said manager Rob Thomson. “It was frightening because he fell, got back up, and then fell again.” He added that the whole situation was indeed very scary.

After the incident, Robert was taken to a hospital but was released a few hours later.

The 31-year-old has had an interesting career—he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 21st round of the 2017 MLB Draft and made his Major League debut with them in 2024, pitching four games that season. He was then traded to the Phillies in April 2025 for a minor league player and appeared in 15 games for Philadelphia last season.

As for his future, it remains uncertain when Robert will return to pitching while the situation is assessed.
