On Wednesday, the Phillies struggled with poor baserunning for the second consecutive night.
In the fifth inning, Trea Turner faced Dodgers’ left-hander Eric Lauer. Meanwhile, Bryson Stott, who had been on second base, got thrown out at third, with Max Muncy waiting on a fielder’s choice.
The blunder was so frustrating that the Dodgers Sportsnet announcers, Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser, couldn’t believe it.
“What are those guys doing?” Davis remarked as Stott was tagged out.
“I have no idea,” replied Hershiser.
The Dodgers took control right after, going on to win the game 9-5 against the Phillies.
Just a night earlier, the Phillies had lost 2-1 due to a cringe-worthy double play.
JT Realmuto could have remained at third base when Justin Crawford was caught between third and home. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it back to second, leading to the last out.
His manager, Don Mattingly, expressed his disbelief in a candid moment.
“I’m not sure what JT was thinking,” Mattingly commented.
The Dodgers managed to take two out of three games in the series, largely due to these baserunning mistakes.
The Phillies did manage to clinch Game 1, winning 10-7 on Monday.
Despite the recent errors, Stott is having a solid season, maintaining a batting average of .251, with seven home runs and 17 stolen bases through 96 games.
This weekend, the Phillies aim to sharpen their fundamentals as they host the Yankees for a three-game series. They will be facing off against Will Warren, Cy Young contender Cam Schrittler, and Ryan Weathers.
