The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a rare triple play against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
Trailing by four runs in the bottom of the third, the Tigers tried to mount a comeback with a pair of singles from Zach McKinstry and Carson Kelly, but the threat vanished as quickly as it began.

A broken liner off Matt Beiring’s bat hit Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, starting a 1-3-5 triple play. Nola threw the ball to Harper, who threw the ball to Alec Bohm for the third out.
“I realized [what might happen] “After I threw it to first base,” Nola told reporters. Via MLB.com“… It happened so quickly. It was pretty cool. I thought it was a good way to end the inning.”

It was the first triple play in about 95 years. According to MLB’s announcement, citing a report from the Society for American Baseball Research, the last triple play was achieved on July 11, 1929, in a game between the Tigers and the Boston Red Sox.
It was the first triple play since the Chicago Cubs did it against the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023. The Phillies hadn’t made a triple play since 2017 against the Cubs.
Harper also had a strong game with the bat, hitting a home run and driving in five RBIs as Philadelphia won, 8-1.

Nola allowed just six hits and one run in seven innings, earning his 99th career win.
