Phillips suggests Hochul pardon Trump 'for the good of the country'

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) urged New York Governor Kathy Hockle (D) to pardon former President Trump, who was recently convicted in a hush money trial.

“Donald Trump is a habitual liar, cheater, cheater, a six-time corporate bankruptcy declarer, instigator of insurrection and a convicted criminal who thrives on portraying himself as the victim,” Phillips said. Said In a post on social platform X on Friday: “@GovKathyHochul should pardon him for the good of the country.”

Trump on Thursday became the first former U.S. president to be convicted after a jury found him guilty on all charges of falsifying business records to hide an alleged affair during the 2016 election campaign.

Shortly after the jury read out the verdict, Trump denounced the hush money trial as “unjust” and “shameful.”

“Do you think pardons are stupid?” Phillips, a former presidential candidate, asked. Said “Making him a martyr for paying a porn star is foolish (an entirely separate campaign expense), but it will energize his base, generate record amounts of campaign cash, and likely lead to an election victory,” X wrote in a post on Saturday.

Trump’s son, Eric Trump, bragged about the amount of money he raised for his father’s campaign after the former president was convicted in the case on Friday.

“What’s really amazing is, if you just look back to 2016, the largest fundraising ever at that point was $16 million raised in one day,” Eric Trump told Fox News’ Jesse Watters.

“And just a few minutes ago, we announced $52.8 million in a 24-hour period, but it’s probably another $5 million to $6 million more than that based on the fact that this was exactly 24 hours after the time of the indictment, which was around 5:30 p.m. [p.m.]” Trump continued.

The Hill has reached out to Phillips’ office.
