A Brave Act on Easter: A Boy’s Struggle for Recovery

A five-year-old from Minnesota, Ashkan Thibodeaux, displayed remarkable bravery on Easter Sunday by saving his brother Wyatt from drowning. Now, however, he is facing his own health battle as the local community comes together to support the family.

The two brothers were playing by a stream in Itasca County when Wyatt fell into the freezing water and got stuck. Without a moment’s thought, Ashkan jumped in to rescue him, ultimately saving his life. Tragically, this heroic act left Ashkan with significant brain damage, necessitating hospital care.

A GoFundMe page was established to assist with Ashkan’s recovery. It details the harrowing incident: “While exploring near a stream with his brother Wyatt, a terrible accident occurred. Wyatt slipped and fell into the icy water. Ashkan did not hesitate for a second. He recognized the danger and jumped in to save his brother, guiding him to safety and saving his life.”

After their risky escape from the freezing water, both boys survived, but Ashkan suffered serious internal injuries. He spent some time on life support before undergoing multiple surgeries, which included the removal of his appendix and part of his colon, as well as a section of his small intestine. Doctors remain hopeful for his recovery in the future.

The GoFundMe page mentions that Ashkan is currently receiving excellent care. The collective prayers from doctors, paramedics, and many others are said to inspire him in his fight. Still, there are significant emotional and financial hurdles ahead for the family.

“Ashkan’s courage serves as a powerful reminder of love and selflessness. Now it’s time for us to come together for him and his family,” one supporter noted. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraising campaign had surpassed $48,000.

His family shared that he has sustained a mild brain injury, but he is making progress in his recovery post-incident. Local hockey moms have also stepped in to help, selling T-shirts and raising funds for the kindergartener’s family.

One of the mothers expressed, “I just want everyone to know that they need prayers. He has a long way to go.” In recent updates, it’s been reported that Ashkan was able to sit in a chair, bringing a wave of joy and relief to his family. “God is at work, and we continue to watch God work today,” they added.
