Delta Air Lines Hosts a Special Passenger for America’s 250th Anniversary
On Friday, a Delta Air Lines flight celebrated America’s 250th anniversary by transporting a unique passenger: a bald eagle named “Independence,” or just “Indy” for convenience. This flight traveled from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Philadelphia, allowing passengers an unexpected treat.
Indy, the resident ambassador at Auburn University’s Raptor Center, was en route to partake in various Independence Day festivities, including the unveiling of the America 250 time capsule and a burial ceremony at Independence Hall.
Before taking on her ambassador role, Indy had a challenging start, having been injured when she was young. Now, she’s also known as one of the “War Eagles,” who often soar over football stadiums, and has even glided over Philadelphia during an Eagles game.
The university shared that Indy was accompanied by staff from the Raptor Center, and they coordinated with relevant authorities prior to the flight. They also advised other passengers to consider wearing earplugs, in case Indy made any noise during the journey, as she was situated in a dedicated space on the flight.
Indy appeared majestic in photos taken in Philadelphia, attracting the attention of many who were eager to snap pictures with her.
The Auburn University Raptor Center expressed gratitude for being able to attend the America 250 Time Capsule dedication in Philadelphia. They thanked the organizers, partners, and the city’s residents for their warm reception, highlighting the honor of representing Auburn, celebrating the nation’s history, and advocating for conservation.
On her return journey to Alabama, Indy was seen thanking the flight crew, gate agents, pilots, airport staff, and others who contributed to a successful trip. The center noted, “Thanks to your help, we were able to share the story of America’s national bird on a national stage while keeping Indy’s health, safety, and comfort top of mind every step of the journey.”
