Physical therapist killed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber fire at his Arizona clinic

On Wednesday evening, a tragic incident occurred at a hyperbaric therapy center in Arizona when a flash of light ignited an oxygen therapy machine, leading to a fatal fire. Dr. Walter Foxcroft, 43, unfortunately perished in the high-pressure chamber, and firefighters discovered his body after arriving at the Havasu Health and Hyperbarics office following a fire report around 11 PM, according to the Havasu City Fire Department.

When first responders entered the building, smoke filled the air, creating a chaotic scene. They found the chamber engulfed in flames, with Foxcroft’s body trapped inside. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported.

These hyperbaric chambers are commonly used for various therapeutic purposes, manipulating air pressure and oxygen levels for the health and wellness of patients.

Details surrounding why Dr. Foxcroft was present late at night remain unclear. Remembered fondly by his former classmates, he graduated from the University of Arizona in 2005. Friends noted his lively spirit during his time as the university mascot, Wilbur T. Wildcat, where he entertained fans with his signature moves.

He was described as unforgettable on the sidelines, sharing his enthusiasm and forming a connection with Arizona supporters. Foxcroft, known for his dedication to performance and innovation, was commended for the joy he brought to many.

After earning his Bachelor of Physiology, he shifted gears from research to embrace life as a mascot, even supporting the team during Super Bowl XLIII in 2006 before returning to academics. He later received his PhD in Physiotherapy from Touro University Nevada in 2012.

Foxcroft recently established Havasu Health and Overrelations in 2024, aiming to provide the first integrated natural hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in Arizona. Operations at the practice are currently suspended as investigations into the fire unfold.

Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the incident. Earlier this year, a similar tragedy occurred involving a young boy who suffered fatal injuries during a treatment in a hyperbaric chamber due to an explosion. Subsequent legal actions were taken against several staff members at the facility involved.
