Chula Vista Woman Sues After Pickleball Incident

A woman from Chula Vista is taking legal action against the city, claiming her experience while playing pickleball turned dangerous.

Renee Love reportedly lost consciousness after leaning against a fence that was electrically charged, with over 100 volts running through it.

On August 19, 2025, Love was discovered unconscious, holding her breath while leaning against a black chain-link fence at the Better at Pickleball court located at the Chula Vista Elite Athletic Training Center. These details were shared in a report.

According to the lawsuit, the metal fence became energized following a mishap when someone attempted to connect wiring from a nearby utility pole. When Love came into contact with it, she was violently thrown onto the pavement.

The documents filed in court indicate that she sustained serious injuries to her head, back, and nervous system.

“Our investigation shows that this was not a danger that came out of nowhere,” stated Love’s attorney, Brian Mason. “Responsible parties have a duty to act immediately—whether that means shutting down the area, alerting patrons, cutting off power, or making necessary repairs.”

In her lawsuit, Love is suing the City of Chula Vista, Better at Pickleball, Elite Athletic Services, and Brandon See. She accuses them of gross negligence and facility liability for not closing the facility despite knowing about the risk.

The complaint alleges that the defendants failed to shut down the courtroom, restrict access, disconnect the hazardous electrical power, and warn patrons about the existing dangers.

Mason criticized the sports facility for putting Love in such a perilous situation. He emphasized that this lawsuit aims to hold those responsible accountable.
