Pilot, 35, identified from Brazil plane that spiraled out of sky and crashed, killing 62

The pilot of the plane that crashed, killing all 62 people on board, has been identified as the investigation into the South American plane crash continues.

Dario Pacheco, mayor of the city of Vinhedo in Sao Paulo state, said Captain Danilo Santos Romano, 35, was the first victim identified in Friday’s fiery crash in Brazil.

According to Romano’s LinkedIn profile, he has more than 10 years of experience in the aviation industry and has worked for Voepass Linhas airline since June 2023.

Romano is certified by both Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Authority and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to his LinkedIn profile.

An experienced pilot was in the cockpit when the ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft crashed into a residential area of ​​the city of Vinhedo.

All 62 people on board were killed in the fiery crash, local authorities and the airline said.

All the bodies were being transferred to the São Paulo police morgue, authorities said at a press conference after the accident.

“Once we have all the evidence, we will extricate the victim from the wreckage, place him in a vehicle and transport him to Sao Paulo,” firefighter Macon Crist said at the scene of the crash.

The victims included four people with dual nationality: three Venezuelans and a Portuguese woman, regional airline Voepas said.

The Venezuelans were identified as a 4-year-old boy, his mother and grandmother. Reuters reported.The report quoted local media outlet GloboNews.

Footage of the fatal crash showed the plane drifting vertically downwards and spiraling as it fell.

At the wreckage site, the mangled fuselage of the plane was visible in Vinhedo, a residential area on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

The fire brigade, gendarmerie and civil defense have all sent teams to the scene, where authorities are working to identify the victims using seating arrangements, physical descriptions, documents and belongings such as mobile phones.

Federal authorities said the plane’s black boxes were found early Saturday morning.

The airline said it had not determined how the accident happened, and Brazil’s aviation authority said in a statement it would launch an investigation.
