Update: The initial headline incorrectly identified David Frye as a member of the Detroit Tigers; he actually plays for the Cleveland Guardians.
Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Frye was rushed to the hospital after being hit in the face by a fastball from Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal during a game on Tuesday. His condition has been updated.
Frye attempted a bunt in the sixth inning of the Guardians’ 5-2 victory over the Tigers when he missed the ball with the bat. The 29-year-old, now in his third season in the MLB, collapsed to the ground after being struck, immediately clutching his face.
Fortunately, Skubal’s worries eased when Frye waved to him from the ground, indicating he was okay.
Frye was initially treated at Lutheran Medical Center before being transferred to the Cleveland Clinic.
Nevertheless, it’s reported that Frye suffered significant injuries that could take up to eight weeks to heal. While surgery isn’t expected at this time, he has several facial and nasal fractures.
“It’s really tough,” Skubal said in a post-game media availability. “I’ve already reached out to him, and I’m sure his phone is buzzing. I just want to ensure he’s okay. Obviously, he left the field, and hopefully, he’s fine.”
“I just hope to hear from him tonight or tomorrow morning to make sure he’s all good, because there’s more to life than the game, and his health is what really matters.”
So far this season, Frye has a batting average of .171 with 23 RBIs, eight home runs, four doubles, and .592 OPS. He made the MLB All-Star Game last year.
Frye underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow last November and returned to play on June 1st, but he has been limited to designated hitter duties this season.
