Gunfire Disrupts High School Football Interview in Pittsburgh
A postgame interview at Pittsburgh’s George K. Cupples Stadium took a frightening turn Thursday night when gunshots were heard.
According to reports, players from Westinghouse Academy were in the middle of an interview after their impressive 35-0 victory over University Prep when chaos erupted.
Local news outlet WTAE reported that three individuals, believed to be teenagers, sustained injuries from the gunfire and were subsequently hospitalized in stable condition.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando stated that officers were present to maintain safety when the shots rang out, as they attempted to control a fight that had broken out among the crowd.
“We had officers both inside and outside of the stadium, just there out of precaution as a safety measure,” Lando explained. “As the game ended, there was a large crowd out here on Carson Street. A couple of fights broke out. We had multiple officers from the city and Port Authority on the scene, helping to facilitate people safely getting out, when suddenly, someone pulled out a firearm and fired multiple rounds.”
Pittsburgh Public Schools released a statement emphasizing that the safety and well-being of students is their top priority and expressed gratitude towards the police and public safety officials who responded quickly. The statement also mentioned that the district would continue collaborating with public safety partners and provide support to those affected by the incident.
