Memphis Restaurant Flourishes After Rebuffing National Guard
A Memphis pizza place has surprisingly thrived after refusing service to the National Guard. This came in response to calls from conservative activists for a boycott. Owner Miles Tamboli had made a stand against the federally-led Memphis Safety Task Force, stating that military presence in law enforcement diminishes the city’s safety instead of enhancing it.
After denying service to a few uniformed National Guard members on July 11, the restaurant faced significant online backlash. Yet, support has poured in since, with locals reportedly flocking to Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza. “I wholeheartedly support that decision,” he mentioned during a recent conversation, noting a marked increase in business. The packed atmosphere on a recent Friday showcased the unexpected turnout.
“Italian ‘Junto’ was filled to capacity, with patrons lining up by 5:30 p.m.,” a report highlighted. Tamboli remarked that they had never seen such early hustle, indicating strong support from the community, contrary to what some might think.
Customers have expressed endorsement of Tamboli’s stance as well. One diner, Sarah Jones, articulated that she doesn’t blame the National Guard for being in Memphis, but admires restaurants that refuse military service as a form of protest. Another customer, Carol Bigham, illustrated her support for Tamboli’s position, emphasizing the right to free speech and business discretion.
Concerns About the Memphis Task Force
Tamboli, in his communication with media outlets, voiced his disapproval of the Memphis Safety Task Force, initiated by President Trump in September 2025. This task force blends efforts from local police with federal agents and the National Guard to enforce public safety measures.
According to Tamboli, the initiative has inadvertently made the city less habitable. He pointed out that most arrests stem from routine traffic stops rather than violent actions, which has instilled fear among residents about daily activities, such as driving to work or taking children to school. Furthermore, he recounted a tragic incident involving a 20-year-old local named Tylin Johnson, who was shot by National Guard members, highlighting the lack of accountability as a significant concern for the community.
With the restaurant experiencing an unexpected surge in customers, Tamboli mused about whether this support would remain steady. However, he feels positive, seeing no decrease in patronage from any particular political side. “I don’t track anyone’s politics,” he stated, reaffirming that he will serve any guests that come through his door, maintaining that his primary objective is to run a successful business while upholding his values.
Reflecting on the consequences of the task force, he reiterated the public’s outrage would likely focus on the impact of federal presence if similar incidents occurred elsewhere in the country. In his view, small business owners exercising their First Amendment rights should be encouraged, not condemned. “You can’t wave the flag and boo free speech at the same time,” he concluded, emphasizing the values he believes in.
