Plea Deal Offers Closure to Families of Gilgo Beach Serial Killer's Victims: 'Relieved This Is Done'

Families of the eight women targeted by Rex Heuerman, the Gilgo Beach serial killer, have expressed relief following his guilty plea regarding their deaths.

In court, when prosecutors questioned Heuerman about how he killed the women, he reiterated “strangulation” eight times. Reports indicate that he is now facing three life sentences in prison.

Melissa Kang, the sister of victim Maureen Brainerd Burns, shared her thoughts with reporters after Heuerman’s plea, encouraging other families still searching for closure not to lose hope. She remarked, “Even when it feels impossible, even when years have passed and you feel like it shouldn’t go on, your loved ones matter. They will never be forgotten, and answers will come. Finally, to Maureen, the promise I made to you so long ago is that I will never stop looking for you.”

Heuerman admitted to killing the women and burying their bodies near Gilgo Beach. He pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder. Additionally, he confessed to killing an eighth victim, Karen Bergata, a case dating back to 1996.

Reports mention that over 30 relatives of his victims were present in court as he admitted to the murders of Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainerd-Burns, Amber Lynn Costello, Sandra Costilla, and Karen Vergata.

Elizabeth Bacchiel, Taylor’s mother, expressed her sentiments, stating, “I’m glad this is over. As for his guilty plea, it’s saved a lot of stress for our family. I wholeheartedly accept that plea.”

Kang addressed her late sister, saying, “Justice has finally arrived for you. Your voice has never been silenced. Your story has never been forgotten, and your life will always mean more than the tragedy that befell you.”

A former escort commented in 2023 about her experience with Heuerman on NewsNation, saying he gave her an uncomfortable feeling and showed disregard for the victims, mentioning, “Well, we were all just bodyguards anyway.”

Moreover, his daughter expressed to the Associated Press that she believed he “most likely” committed the murders.
