According to labor sources, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to call the federal elections for Friday's election day.
In Canberra, there was speculation that Albanese could visit the governor on Friday or Sunday to use momentum from Tuesday's federal budget and draw attention from Peter Dutton's budget reply speech on Thursday night.
Several senior labor sources told Guardian Australia on Thursday afternoon that the election would be called on Friday, but other sources did not underestimate the speculation.
This timing distracts attention from Dutton's budget reply speech. There, the opposition leaders will explain more in detail his alternative vision for the country.
After opposing the workers' surprise new income tax cuts, Dutton uses a key speech on Thursday night to promise to halve the fuel excise tax for 12 months, while also anticipating an announcement on gas supply, housing and migration.
Albanese was able to seek elections on either May 3rd, 10th or 17th. “It will be called quite imminently,” the prime minister said Thursday morning.
“I can make sure I'm not calling it today, but I'll call it right away,” he told Triple M Radio.
Labour MPs and strategists believe the government has regained momentum over the past month after several high-priced announcements, including a $8.5 billion boost to Medicare, and strengthened scrutiny over Dutton and his policies.

The coalition's mixed message to dissolve the insurance company was that, as Queensland's hometown was supported by Cyclone Alfred, the idea of a Dutton dash to Sydney fundraiser and a referendum on the deportation of dual citizens prompted negative headlines and encouraged internal unrest about the opposition's strategy.
The polls continued to point to legislatures suspended after the election, forcing Albanese or Dutton to negotiate with the crossbench to form a minority government.
“he [Dutton] We've made a series of forced errors and we've been talking about what we want to talk about,” said one Labor Minister.

The government enters caretaker mode after the parliament is dissolved, but this has not happened yet.
Guardian Australia was told that the post was accidentally published and was deleted shortly after it was published.
