Podcast host criticizes far-left New York winner for holding foolish opinions.

Zohran Mamdani drives a socialist movement pushing the Democratic Party to the left

Democrats React to New York Primary Upsets

Co-hosts of the podcast Pod Save America discussed the surprise wins by several Democratic Socialist candidates in the New York primary, expressing concern over the reaction within the Democratic Party. Some co-hosts labeled the candidates’ viewpoints as “stupid to abhorrent.”

Dalializa Avila Chevalier emerged as a notable candidate, receiving support from Mayor Zoran Mamdani. However, her history of controversial statements has sparked outrage among more traditional Democrats. Strategist James Carville suggested a potential split in the party, stating, “I don’t belong to that goddamn party” and emphasized that some views shouldn’t coexist.

During the podcast, Jon Favreau, a former Obama speechwriter, showcased clips of Carville’s comments and sought input from his co-host Dan Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer asserted the need for attention to the trend of incumbents losing to far-left candidates.

AOC’s Warning

Pfeiffer noted that the recent results indicate progressives are besting establishment candidates, giving a dire warning for the Democratic establishment. He highlighted that support from mainstream figures like Chuck Schumer might not benefit campaigns, and could even hurt them.

He pointed out that leftist groups like Justice Democrats and Democratic Socialists of America are mobilizing and outperforming traditional party organizations—a shift that could reshape party dynamics.

Regarding the implications for the party’s future, he said, “Democratic establishment members should be deeply concerned about what this indicates about the party’s viability going forward.” It’s significant, to say the least.

Split in Opinions

Favreau commented on Chevalier’s left-leaning positions. He acknowledged the liberal nature of New York, but cautioned that it doesn’t fully represent the national landscape. There are still moderate candidates who could succeed in some races.

“Dalia Lisa Avila Chevalier may be the most left-wing candidate to win a Democratic primary in our lifetimes,” he suggested. While there’s room to look past past controversies, he noted there are some issues that cannot be overlooked.

Favreau pointed to Chevalier’s participation in an anti-Israel rally criticized by various figures, including Mamdani and AOC. She continues to defend her involvement, which raises eyebrows.

He also mentioned her recent interview where she rejected all forms of deportation and expressed support for open borders, claiming “borders are very modern constructs.” While perhaps there’s some humor in it, there are serious reservations about her positions.

“In our hearts, borders are in our hearts,” Favreau said, jesting about her desire to abolish prisons without directly addressing the implications of such views.

He expressed hope that Chevalier might evolve in her thinking once in Congress, although he believes her current viewpoints diverge from those of the broader Democratic base. “Her ideas, ranging from stupid to abhorrent, don’t sit well with most Democrats or even potential voters,” he added.

Attempts to reach Avila Chevalier’s campaign for comment were unsuccessful.
