Poker player finishes World Series event hours after heart attack

Apparently there’s a whole other level to trying your luck.

While competing in the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas, participant Adam Roode experienced what was determined to be a heart attack by medical personnel.

“I woke up shivering and feeling cold. I thought it was cold so I decided to take a shower to warm myself up and I just stood there and I woke up on the ground like this,” Rood said. Poker News.

Ruud claimed he did not believe he had suffered a heart attack, but reported feeling “fatigued” throughout the fifth day of competition.

Ruud also said doctors had determined there was no damage to his heart but had given him “powerful” medication to enable him to continue competing.

Ruud added that in 2014 he suffered from a heart and liver condition that left him with a defibrillator, but that the device was activated during his preparations on fight day.

Despite his ill health, Ruud finished 194th out of 10,112 entrants in this year’s main event, but still won $60,000 from the event.

In 2018, Ruud also placed 116th in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event at the World Series of Poker, winning $57,010.

According to Poker News, Ruud is ranked 206,351 on the Global Poker Index with lifetime winnings of $61,963.

As for the remaining competitors in the 2024 World Series of Poker, as of Friday, Americans Kevin Davis and Andrew Arbogast were sitting in seats one and two for the event, the 81st No-Limit Hold’em World Championship, which is expected to decide the winner.

With just 160 players remaining and a $10,000 entry fee, the winner of the contest will take home $10 million.
