High-Speed Chase in Aurora Leads to Arrest of Career Criminal

A man with a lengthy criminal record is back in custody following a high-speed chase in Aurora that occurred early Monday morning. During the incident, a blind passenger in the vehicle reportedly pleaded to be let out.

Aurora police described the individual’s extensive criminal history as potentially the most extensive they have encountered, noting the bizarre circumstances surrounding his arrest. The chase began around 3 a.m., when officials detected a stolen vehicle using their camera technology, located near Scranton Street, just south of Smith Road.

Officers quickly spotted the car and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, refusing to stop, led them on a pursuit through the city. Police recordings show the situation escalating rapidly, with officers reporting that the vehicle was speeding.

The individual, identified as 55-year-old Larry Burns, has a notorious reputation as a career criminal. His prior arrests are numerous, encompassing charges from drug distribution to assaults and robberies.

As the chase continued, officers utilized traffic cameras to monitor Burns’ movements towards Quebec Street and Exposition Avenue. They ultimately employed a pit maneuver to halt the pursuit.

After the vehicle came to a stop, Burns attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by the officers. Tensions were high as police ordered him to comply. Inside the vehicle, they discovered a female passenger who, according to her account, had repeatedly begged the driver to stop, raising serious concerns about her safety, which contributed to kidnapping charges.

Investigators later discovered more than 30 grams of methamphetamine and crack cocaine in the stolen car. As a result, Burns faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, motor vehicle theft, possession with intent to distribute, driving under the influence, and felony fleeing. He also had an existing warrant at the time of his arrest.

Aurora police emphasized that their proactive patrol tactics and real-time technology played a crucial role in apprehending Burns before the situation escalated further. The department expressed a commitment to maintaining safety on the streets of Aurora, regardless of the hour.
