Houston police announced Tuesday that a suspect has been charged in the 2022 shooting death of a man who was cooking for the homeless.

Rayshard Jamal Potts, 23, has been charged with murder in the death of Terrence Lewis, 20, police said in a statement.

Authorities say Lewis was at a co-worker's apartment on June 15, 2022. Police said both men worked for a nonprofit organization that prepares meals for the city's homeless.

Police said Lewis went outside to throw out the trash after cooking. Authorities said someone fired shots at Lewis from the parking lot as he was returning to his apartment.
