More than 200 people have been arrested at the university, according to Sgt. Alejandro Rubio of the California Highway Patrol.

Early Thursday morning, officers wearing bulletproof vests, helmets and face shields removed barricades as protesters tried to hold together a collection of plywood and metal fencing.

Rubio said those arrested are being held in a county jail near downtown Los Angeles. UCLA police reported a number of people were arrested on suspicion of failure to disperse, according to law enforcement officials. This is a misdemeanor. Los Angeles Times.

The arrests came after officers spent several hours using loudspeakers threatening people with arrest if they did not leave.

More than 1,000 anti-Israel demonstrators gathered on campus, many holed up in tent encampments. This caused chaos on campus, with multiple scuffles breaking out and firecrackers being thrown.

A police helicopter was seen hovering over the campus, sending out flash bangs to disperse the crowd. Protesters then shouted at police: “Where were you last night?”

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said Thursday that “it’s not like anything goes” regarding protests across the United States.

“Vandalism, trespassing, broken windows, campus closures, forced cancellations of classes and graduation ceremonies – none of these are peaceful protests,” Biden said. “Dissent is essential to democracy, but dissent must never cause disruption or deny the rights of others so that students can complete their college education through the semester. It won’t happen.”

He reiterated that discrimination should never be tolerated.

“There is no place for hate speech and violence of any kind, including anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and discrimination against Arab-Americans and Palestinian-Americans. It is simply wrong,” he said.

Meanwhile, UCLA has moved all classes online for the rest of the week following protests on campus.

Protests continue to increase across the country as anti-Israel demonstrators continue to demand that universities completely sever ties with Israel.
