Allegations Against D.C. Police Chief
A new report claims that Pamela Smith, the outgoing chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, deliberately skewed crime statistics in Washington, D.C., to present a more favorable image.
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released an interim report following interviews with several high-ranking Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) commanders. This inquiry started in August, prompted by claims that leaders had pressured subordinates to manipulate crime data.
According to the report, the committee’s members found that the department’s leadership was more focused on concealing crime statistics than on addressing crime itself. Commanders reported feeling both pressured and directed to downgrade crime classifications to avoid inclusion in public crime reports.
The report also depicted a “toxic management culture” under Smith’s leadership, fostering an environment of fear and intimidation.
Despite Smith’s intention to resign at the end of the month, lawmakers expressed concern that inaccuracies in MPD’s crime data could persist.
Rep. James Comer, the committee’s chairman, emphasized that the residents and visitors of D.C. deserve a safe environment. He criticized Smith for seemingly manipulating data and creating mistrust among the public regarding law enforcement’s integrity.
Comer suggested that Smith’s announced resignation should be viewed not as a personal choice but as a necessary decision that should have been made sooner. He stated directly, “Secretary Smith should resign today.”
Moreover, former commander Michael Pulliam has been on leave since May due to accusations of data manipulation. At that time, Smith had claimed the department was committed to rectifying any irregularities in crime data.
Last week, Smith revealed her decision to step down effective December 31st without providing a clear reason, which raised questions amid ongoing scrutiny surrounding her and the department’s practices.
As these allegations continue to unfold, they coincide with President Trump’s warnings about potential federal intervention if local leaders don’t tackle rising crime rates in the area.
The MPD has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
