Man Arrested in London Stabbings, Terrorism Suspected

A 45-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing two individuals during an incident in a Jewish neighborhood in London, which authorities are investigating as a potential terrorist attack.

On Wednesday morning, two men were transported to the hospital following the stabbings in Golders Green, located in north London. Though both suffered serious injuries, they are currently said to be in stable condition.

The first stabbing took place outside Hager’s Shul synagogue, where a 34-year-old Jewish man was attacked shortly after leaving the building. Surveillance footage shows the assailant casually approaching before suddenly attacking the victim, who was adjusting his hat and had little time to prepare or defend himself.

Shortly after that, the attacker struck again, this time targeting a 76-year-old man further down the street. Interestingly, the suspect was moving between the two sites when he happened to walk past North London Hatzolah, the Jewish emergency charity that experienced an anti-Semitic arson attack just a month prior.

After the stabbings, the suspect confronted members of Shomrim, a Jewish community safety organization, and police officers before being apprehended. Footage from near the arrest location, just 300 meters from where Hatzolah’s ambulance was recently attacked, shows police pursuing the suspect and employing a Taser.

The individual, described as a visibly strong African man dressed in light clothing beneath a navy blue jacket, eventually fell to the ground and faced multiple kicks from officers during the arrest attempt. A volunteer from Shomrim was seen restraining the suspect’s legs while police put him in handcuffs.

“The suspect also attempted to stab a police officer but was subdued with a Taser. Fortunately, the officer was unharmed,” stated the Metropolitan Police.

In response to the incident, anti-terrorism police quickly took over the investigation, designating it a suspected terrorist event soon after.

This attack seems to underscore the urgency for the British government to take action regarding the rising targeting of Jewish individuals. The Foreign Office remarked, “enough has been said” about anti-Semitism in the UK and emphasized the need for decisive and urgent action.

After a series of attacks against Jews—including those on synagogues and local emergency services—the UK government can no longer claim the situation is under control. Statements from Prime Minister Keir Starmer won’t replace the need to address the deep-rooted issues of anti-Semitism. British Jews shouldn’t require security measures to live openly as themselves.

Britain’s Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis expressed that mere dialogue is no longer sufficient. He stated:

In light of the anti-Semitic stabbings today in Golders Green, words of condemnation are inadequate. This demands substantive action from every institution and community, as well as engaging every decent individual in our society. We must confront this hatred together.

Ambassador Yehuda Kaprun, President Trump’s special envoy on anti-Semitism, echoed these sentiments, articulating his outrage over yet another violent incident directed at the Jewish community.

I am heartbroken and outraged by this latest anti-Semitic attack in the UK. Britain must now take meaningful actions to ensure the safety of its Jewish population.

In a scene reminiscent of previous incidents, former Home Secretary David Lammy faced heckling from community members who criticized the government’s safety assurance for Jewish citizens. Additionally, London’s Metropolitan Police chief was met with shouts of “resign” and “shame on you” when he attempted to address the press. Golders Green Labor MP Sarah Sackman experienced similar backlash during the same event.
