Missing Girl Found Safe in North Carolina
On March 10, police revealed that a girl, who was allegedly kidnapped from California in 2020, has been located safe in North Carolina.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported that the now 11-year-old girl was discovered after a call from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LACSD) and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). She was reportedly taken in Los Angeles County on June 2, 2020.
Thanks to several tips, WCSO realized the child had been attending schools in Washington County under a different name. The sheriff’s office collaborated with various agencies in both North Carolina and California to bring the girl to safety.
“It’s quite unusual for an old case to result in such a positive outcome, but it’s a testament to hard work, dedication, and cooperation,” a WCSO representative commented. “Stories with uplifting endings like this can, in fact, occur.”
For privacy reasons, the name of the child has not been disclosed. However, sources have identified her as Karen Rojas, who was just five years old when she was reportedly abducted. Rojas was last seen in Duarte, California.
As of now, no arrests have been made connected to Rojas’s alleged kidnapping. Authorities are trying to understand how she ended up nearly 4,650 miles away from her home.
At the time of her disappearance, it was indicated that Los Angeles County DCFS was looking into the situation. LACSD noted that they believe Rojas’s mother, who had custody at the time, may have taken her after losing contact with DCFS.
The Daily Caller reached out to LACSD, which then referred them to the Temple Sheriff’s Department. A spokesperson from this department confirmed that the girl had been safely located in North Carolina, adding that she was reported missing when her mother stopped communicating with DCFS.
A representative from the Los Angeles County DCFS stated they were unable to provide any details regarding potential family involvement due to confidentiality laws designed to protect those connected with the agency from emotional distress during ongoing complex family situations.
A reminder was issued to the public: suspected child abuse or neglect can be reported anytime by calling the Child Protection Hotline at 800-540-4000.
The Daily Caller also attempted to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
