An NYPD officer fatally shot a 54-year-old man in a Lower East Side apartment building on Sunday afternoon. This incident unfolded just after 4 p.m. at 126 Ludlow Street, where police were responding to multiple 911 calls about an ongoing assault.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Melissa Eager mentioned during a news conference on Sunday night that upon entering the building, officers noticed blood stains on the stairs.
As they moved to the second floor, they confronted Wei Zhang, who was descending while holding what authorities identified as a large butcher knife.
“The officers repeatedly commanded the man to show his hands and drop the weapon,” Eager explained. However, as they continued to issue commands, Zhang advanced towards them brandishing the meat cleaver.
In response, the officers fired, striking Zhang, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Interestingly, Eager noted that while Zhang didn’t have a known criminal record, he did have a documented history of mental health issues.
During their investigation, officers discovered Chong Zhang, Wei’s 75-year-old father, with lacerations to his head. It appears that Wei had injured his father before law enforcement arrived. Chong was also taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.
The responding officer was taken for evaluation as well, as is standard procedure in such scenarios. Eager highlighted the bravery of the officers, stating, “Their actions serve as a reminder that police officers run toward danger, not away from it.”
Mayor Zoran Mamdani provided updates on the situation, confirming that body camera footage would be released as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting. He also noted that an internal inquiry would take place following this incident.
The circumstances leading to the shooting are still being probed.
