Illegal Immigrant Charged in Loyola University Student’s Death

Jose Medina, accused of killing Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman in March, has been charged with additional offenses after a weapon was found in his possession while in police custody. Authorities reported that a 6-inch shank was discovered in Medina’s belongings at the Cook County Jail around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Correctional officers recovered the weapon—a sharp piece of metal with a handle wrapped in medical tape—from Medina’s pants pocket, as stated by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. As a result, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed a new felony charge against him for possessing contraband in a penal institution.

Medina, who has been held since March 23, is accused of fatally shooting the 18-year-old Gorman on March 19 at Tobey Prinz Beach in Rogers Park. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, with a next court date set for June 1.

Gorman was with friends near the beach when he noticed Medina nearby. Panic ensued, and as Gorman and his friends attempted to flee, prosecutors allege that Medina fired a shot, hitting Gorman in the upper back. His friends ran until they found refuge, only to discover that Gorman had become unresponsive upon their return.

After the shooting, Medina was reportedly seen on security footage in his apartment building’s lobby without a mask. A construction engineer recognized him, noting his distinct walk. This recognition arose after Medina, originally arrested for shoplifting, had been released under the Biden administration despite concerns about his potential flight risk.

Records indicate that Medina lacks a valid U.S. address or identification, complicating his status in the country further.
