NYPD Distributes Turkeys to Families in Need

On Monday evening, the NYPD handed out approximately 100 turkeys and chickens to families in need in the Bronx. This event is just a small part of a larger initiative where police departments across the city plan to distribute thousands of birds ahead of Thanksgiving.

Officers set up a tent outside the 45th Precinct for the turkey giveaway, with assistance from NYPD officers and volunteers from the department’s Option youth group.

“It may seem like a simple action, but it’s actually extremely important for families facing food insecurity,” said Susan L. Birnbaum, president and CEO of the New York City Police Foundation.

The turkeys were sourced from the Police Foundation, which has donated over 3,000 turkeys for citywide giveaways.

This event at the Bronx station was just one segment of a broader effort. Various districts across New York City are also giving away turkeys in similar events, which began last week and will continue through Wednesday.

“Many families are experiencing food insecurity right now,” Birnbaum remarked. “Having the ability to provide these resources through the generosity of our donors, with the NYPD distributing them to the community, is truly a win-win situation.”

She emphasized that this year’s giveaway is part of a long-standing initiative that has taken place for years.

This service not only ensures that families have meals during the holidays but also fosters connections between local executives and community members each year.

“When people think of police, they think of them as crime fighters, but they’re also partners in the community,” Birnbaum noted. “I think that’s a powerful message to convey, especially when people are in such need of food this year.”
