Modern Police Technique Thwarts Car Burglars in Michigan

In a recent incident in Michigan, burglars seemed to bite off more than they could chew when police employed a cutting-edge pursuit device that ended with the theft of a vehicle and some unexpected consequences.

On Friday, the Livonia Police Department, just outside Detroit, showcased a noteworthy video involving a device known as a “grappler,” which led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man and his companions.

The sequence of events kicked off around 7:25 AM on Thursday, when Michigan State Police (MSP) officers spotted a Chevrolet Cruze believed to have been stolen while on patrol in Detroit.

When the troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off onto the highway, heading toward Livonia. They were aware that a grappler device was available at the local police station, which played a crucial role in the unfolding drama.

Shortly thereafter, Livonia police joined the chase.

The grappler is a device designed to extend from a police cruiser’s bumper, wrap around the wheels of a fleeing vehicle, and tether it securely to the police car with an unbreakable line.

Once the Livonia Police SUV made contact with the Chevrolet, the driver found himself in quite a predicament. Despite attempts to reverse and break free from the line, he ended up damaging the rear axle instead.

Authorities reported that the driver, hailing from Brighton, Michigan, was apprehended on multiple charges, including violating probation and possessing a stolen vehicle. Two women traveling with him were also taken into custody due to outstanding warrants from various jurisdictions.

According to the manufacturer, the Grappler Police Bumper is utilized by around 70 police departments across the United States and has assisted in apprehending over 600 suspects.

The company claims that this device significantly reduces the risks associated with high-speed police pursuits, thereby protecting both other drivers and pedestrians.

Interestingly, the U.S. Border Patrol has also implemented similar technology to stop vehicles fleeing illegal immigrants at the southern border.

MSP Lt. Mike Shaw highlighted the ongoing commitment to leveraging technology in the fight against crime, stating, “We continue to use technology to find and stop criminals in our communities.”
