Police in Portland rescue 6 minors from a sex trafficking ring

Police revealed on Thursday that an operation in Portland, Oregon, resulted in the recovery of at least six underage girls involved in prostitution activities last month.

The girls, aged between 13 and 17, were rescued as part of a crackdown that initiated on April 15, according to the Portland Police Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) along with the East Precinct. The 82nd Street corridor in Southeast Portland has been noted for its ongoing issues with sex trafficking and prostitution. Recently, authorities called the number of victims found during this effort “alarming,” far exceeding typical cases.

Officials mentioned, “It’s not uncommon for HTU officers to assist victims of human trafficking, but seeing so many children rescued in such a brief time frame is quite unusual.” They also expressed uncertainty about whether this reflects a new pattern or is simply an isolated incident.

The girls are now participating in advocacy programs provided by the Portland Police Bureau’s Victim Services and Safety Compass, which helps individuals under 25 who are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) is also involved, aiding in reunifying the girls with parents from out of state and arranging their shelter placements.

It’s worth noting that victims of human trafficking often hesitate to report their situations or engage with the justice system. This reluctance can stem from trauma bonds, repeated victimization, and fear of retaliation.

To assist with the recovery of survivors, the HTU adopts a victim-centered and trauma-informed approach when interacting with those affected.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working on filing charges against suspected human traffickers and those involved in prostitution, although names have not been disclosed as of yet. The police prioritize identifying and protecting victims of human trafficking, emphasizing thorough investigations and collaboration with partners like the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office to ensure accountability for offenders.
