Police Investigate Former UK Ambassador Following Epstein Document Release
British authorities announced a criminal inquiry into Peter Mandelson, a former ambassador to the United States, after the U.S. Department of Justice made a significant volume of court documents related to Jeffrey Epstein public.
Commander Ella Marriott from the Metropolitan Police stated that numerous allegations of misconduct in public office had been reported. This included referrals from the British government itself.
“I can confirm that we’ve opened an investigation into a 72-year-old man, a past government minister, over suspicions of crimes in office,” said Marriott in a recent statement.
Mandelson recently stepped down from the ruling Labour Party after accusations surfaced that he had accepted a payment of $75,000 from Epstein and had shared confidential government information post the 2008 financial crisis.
Following the release of controversial emails linking him to Epstein, Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial role in September. Starmer has since called for an urgent investigation into Mandelson’s dealings with Epstein during his time in office.
On Tuesday, the House of Lords announced that Mandelson would resign, stating, “He will cease to be a member tomorrow. We do not comment on the potential for a police inquiry.”
Jeffrey Epstein, once a powerful financier, died by suicide while in federal custody in 2019, facing serious charges, including the sex trafficking of minors.
