Police Investigate Peter Mandelson's Homes After Epstein Emails

Police Investigation into Peter Mandelson

British police are looking into former ambassador Peter Mandelson, according to the Metropolitan Police, amidst new findings related to Jeffrey Epstein.

This investigation occurs as Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces increased criticism for appointing Mandelson as a special envoy to the U.S., given his connections to the convicted sex offender Epstein.

Earlier this week, police confirmed that they are examining allegations of misconduct in public office against Mandelson, who is 72 years old. This follows the release of documents indicating that he shared sensitive government information with Epstein during his tenure as a government minister, particularly during the 2008 financial crisis.

Deputy Commissioner Hayley Swart shared details about the investigation, stating that officers were sent to two locations: one in Wiltshire County and another in London. She clarified that this search is part of an ongoing inquiry into the misconduct allegations involving a 72-year-old man.

As of now, Mandelson has not been arrested, and the investigation remains active. Reports indicate that police arrived at his central London residence on Friday afternoon.

Mandelson, a prominent figure in British politics for years, recently resigned from the House of Lords following the latest document disclosures. There are also indications that he might soon be formally disqualified from being a member of Parliament.

On another note, the lobbying firm Global Counsel, which Mandelson co-founded, announced it has cut all ties with him, asserting that he no longer has any involvement with the business.

A day prior, Starmer expressed regret to Epstein’s victims for appointing Mandelson but appeared unwilling to resign amidst the fallout from the revelations. In September, he had previously dismissed Mandelson, who had only served as U.S. ambassador for seven months.

Last week’s disclosures concerning Mandelson reawakened controversies surrounding numerous high-profile individuals connected to Epstein, who died in custody in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges, with authorities deeming his death a suicide.

Emails exchanged between Mandelson and Epstein revealed a personal friendship and financial interactions, along with indications that Mandelson relayed sensitive information that could have influenced the market nearly two decades ago.

Starmer reiterated that Mandelson misled him about the nature of his relationship with Epstein, emphasizing that he was unaware of the “depth and darkness” in their connection.

Documents regarding Mandelson’s appointment are expected to be released soon, following a vote by MPs this week, although the exact timeline remains uncertain.
