Detroit Officer Appears in Court Without Pants

In a rather unusual court appearance, a Detroit police officer, Matthew Jackson, logged onto a virtual court session dressed in the top half of his uniform—but without any pants.

During the hearing on October 27, Jackson introduced himself, only to prompt a rather surprising question from Judge Sean Perkins. “Officer, are you wearing pants?” the judge inquired, to which Jackson sheepishly admitted he was not, adjusting his camera to avoid showing his lower half.

Despite the unexpected wardrobe choice, the hearing continued as planned, involving a defendant accused of drag racing and disorderly conduct.

Defense attorney Tatanisha Reed, who represented the woman in court, expressed her disbelief over the situation. “I was trying to figure it out—like, am I seeing what I think I’m seeing? Especially with police officers. It was definitely an interesting day,” she remarked.

Reed even interjected during the session, urging the judge to address the situation, leading to the judge confirming that Jackson should adjust his camera.

In light of the incident, the Detroit police department has announced an investigation and plans to remind officers about the standards for courtroom attire. Chief Judge William McConnico noted that Judge Perkins was “obviously surprised” by the officer’s attire, emphasizing that Jackson is typically known for his professionalism.

“I was a little taken aback because he’s always been very polite to everyone,” McConnico added, reflecting on the incident.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison made it clear that officers are expected to present themselves in a dignified manner in court. He acknowledged that the actions of those involved did not reflect the department’s standards and promised appropriate follow-up actions to preserve public trust.
