Officers on Long Island fatally shot a man who had threatened them with a BB rifle after having an emotional moment with his mother, authorities reported on Wednesday.
James Rosano, 33, exited his family home in Carle Place and aimed his BB gun at a responding officer during a domestic disturbance. Reportedly, just before this, he told his mother, “You’re going to kiss me, I’m going to go outside and die at the hands of the police.”
Rosano’s mother had called 911 just after midnight, stating he was intoxicated and “uncontrollably” refusing to leave the house. When officers arrived, they spoke with her at the front door and, seeing what they believed to be a shotgun, took action.
The officers urged Rosano multiple times to drop his weapon. He was eventually taken to Long Island’s Nurnagone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
It was later confirmed that the weapon Rosano pointed at the officers was a Crossman BB gun.
Nassau County officials indicated that the officers faced a serious threat and acted accordingly, with the police commissioner posting a photo of the BB gun as evidence.
Rosano had a long history of struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse, reflected in his extensive criminal record. Just days prior to the incident, he had been arrested multiple times, including for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
Records also highlight previous calls concerning Rosano, some dating back to 2010, addressing issues like depression and overdose.
Fortunately, the responding officers were not harmed. Their body cameras were turned over to the state Attorney General’s Office to determine if the shooting was justified.
