Police Raid Anti-Israel Encampment, Arrest 15 People

Police raided an anti-Israel camp at Fordham University this week and arrested 15 people.

As Breitbart News reported on Wednesday, an encampment of anti-Israel protesters has sprung up at Fordham in the wake of a similar encampment at Columbia University.

“The tent is saw It was set up inside a building on the university campus as part of the ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment,”’ the report said. “New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers, wearing riot gear, began raiding anti-Israel camps at Columbia University and the City University of New York (CUNY) late Tuesday night.”

Fordham University President Tania Tetlow issued a statement Wednesday condemning the camp, likening it to robbery and lamenting that the academic institution had no choice but to report it to police.

“This morning, a wave of protests and encampments across the country came to the Lincoln Center campus. Dozens of people stormed the lobby of the Lowenstein building and pitched tents. After threats of conduct sanctions, most People left,” she wrote in an email. “The remaining protesters refused to identify themselves and denied whether they were members of our community. After several warnings, the NYPD issued a misdemeanor trespass. Fifteen people were arrested for the break-in, some of them believed to be Fordham students.

Tetlow acknowledged that people have strong feelings about Gaza and Israel, but stressed that the protests cross a line.

“We draw the line at intrusion into classroom buildings, especially by people who are not members of the community. (Free speech is different from people breaking into your home and screaming.) Outside Lowenstein Now, drawn by social media calls, hundreds of protesters have come from elsewhere to support the few protesters on the other side of the window. Outside, a growing crowd slams against the glass. We were worried that it would break. We were worried that more protesters would flood the campus,” she said.

Similar camps are popping up around the country, including at UCLA.
