Police say two victims of synagogue attack were probably 'accidentally shot' by officers

Tragic Attack at Manchester Synagogue Results in Fatalities

In a disturbing incident on Thursday, two individuals lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries outside a synagogue in Manchester, England. This occurred during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kipur when a suspect reportedly used a vehicle to crash into the synagogue’s wall before launching an attack.

Authorities responded swiftly, and a police officer shot the assailant. However, two victims, identified as Adrian Dowlby, 53, and Melvin Kravitz, 66, were pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the suspect, named Jihad Al Shami, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, was also shot during the confrontation.

According to reports, Dowlby suffered a gunshot wound. Yet, Al Shami was found without any firearms on him when he was apprehended. There’s some concern about the chain of events that led to Dowlby being injured, with suggestions that it may have been an unintended consequence of police actions aimed at neutralizing the threat.

“This injury may, tragically, have resulted from the necessary actions taken by my officers during this malicious attack,” stated an official during a media update.

One more individual remains hospitalized due to a gunshot wound. Family members of Dowlby praised him for his bravery in what they described as his “final act” of courage, while Kravitz’s family expressed their heartbreak over the unexpected loss, emphasizing their commitment to helping others in need.

A gathering took place outside the synagogue where dozens came together in a vigil, despite the rain. Rabbi Ephilam Milvis, a prominent figure in the British Orthodox Jewish community, characterized the attack as part of a troubling trend of “merciless hatred.” He voiced that this violence is not merely an assault on Jews, but an affront to shared values of humanity and respect.

“This goes beyond the Jewish community; it strikes at the heart of compassion, dignity, and respect,” he remarked.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism, suggesting that Al Shami might have been influenced by extremist ideologies. The investigation remains ongoing.
