NYPD Seeks Suspects in Snowball Incident

The New York City Police Department has shared images of two more individuals sought in connection with an incident involving snowballs thrown at uniformed officers in Washington Square Park after a snowstorm turned the area chaotic.

These suspects, thought to be between 18 and 20 years old, were seen wearing black jackets in surveillance footage. One of them was holding a large snowball while the other tried to shield himself from the cold weather with a hood.

The NYPD intends to pursue criminal charges against these two, alongside two other suspects whose images had already been made public, for allegedly striking an officer multiple times in the face, neck, and head with snow and ice.

Following the altercation, two officers were treated at a local hospital for injuries, including one who suffered a possible bruise behind his eye and another who experienced a headache after being hit from behind.

The disturbance reportedly began around 4 PM on Monday when a 911 call alerted the police about teenagers throwing snow from the roof of a park facility. Initially, the police response was minimal, but it escalated significantly once the officers were targeted with snow.

Police unions quickly condemned the actions of those throwing snow, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch echoed their sentiments. She described the activities as “shameful” and “criminal” in a statement.

However, Mayor Zoran Mamdani downplayed the incident, referring to it as juvenile behavior, although he also expressed that officers should be treated with respect.

In a post on X, he mentioned watching a video of kids throwing snow at the officers, adding, “Like all city employees, our police officers have been out in force during this historic snowstorm to keep New Yorkers safe and motorists moving. Treat them with respect. If anyone is catching snowballs, it’s me.”

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made related to this incident.
