Police shoot and kill shirtless man who allegedly threatened residents of assisted living center with a chainsaw

A man suspected of threatening an elderly person with a chainsaw shot dead Sunday morning, according to police.

St. Charles Police say they were called to an assisted living center in St. Charles, Illinois around 8:45 a.m. after a shirtless man attempted to cut down a tree using a chainsaw.

“An unauthorized person briefly entered our community but was quickly stopped by responding officers.”

However, when they arrived, they were told that a man entered the center's lobby and was “confronting residents with a chainsaw.”

Police said they tried to de-escalate the situation, but the man continued to threaten residents and officers. They tried to use a Taser on him to no avail, and one officer then shot him dead.

“The officer was then forced to fire his service firearm, which struck the suspect,” the police statement said.

Police said the man was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delner Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Some residents were treated at the scene for minor injuries, and some police officers were treated.

River Glen of St. Charles Assisted Living Center thanked police in a statement and said the center is cooperating with the investigation.

“This morning, an unauthorized person entered our community briefly but was quickly stopped by responding officers. We are deeply grateful for the quick action of our team and law enforcement. ” said in a statement.

St. Charles is a Chicago suburb of approximately 33,000 people.
