U.S. Capitol Police said Wednesday that authorities stopped a man armed with a machete from attempting to enter the Capitol.
in Threads on social platforms On Wednesday afternoon, Capitol Police said a man attempted to enter the Capitol Visitor Center with a machete, and officers “stopped and arrested him” around 2 p.m. ET. Capitol Police added that the man was arrested after officers found a machete in his bag during a security check.
Capitol Police also said in a thread that the bag contained three knives in addition to the machete, and that the man's arrest was based on “multiple charges of carrying a dangerous weapon.”
“Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” the Capitol Police said in a thread.
The Capitol Police thread comes just days after the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. That day, a mob stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn President-elect Trump's loss in the 2020 presidential election, injuring multiple police officers.
President Trump has promised to pardon the rioters who showed up at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The president-elect also indicated that some pardons could be granted within the first hours of his second term.
