Ohio Police Use Pepper Spray on High School Football Players

Shocking footage has emerged of an altercation during a postgame handshake involving high school football players in Ohio, where police resorted to using pepper spray. This incident took place last Friday following a game where the Washington High School Tigers from Massillon celebrated a 28-14 victory over the Cardinal Ritter College Prep Lions from St. Louis.

The conflict erupted shortly after the match concluded, and when coaches and on-field staff struggled to calm the situation, police officers intervened. Notably, the video suggests that the officers primarily targeted the visiting players rather than those from the home team.

A mother of one of the affected players, Ashley Ashburn, expressed her disbelief over the event, stating she had never witnessed such behavior before. Her son, 16-year-old Dayon “DJ” Ross, was among those sprayed. “It’s just not right to threaten kids, even amidst a skirmish,” she reflected, pushing for a more sensible approach, like simply ordering players off the field instead.

Interestingly, multiple members of the Cardinal Ritter team experienced pepper spray exposure, while it appeared that players from Washington High School were spared. Reports indicate that several players complained of respiratory issues due to the chemical irritants lingering in the air.

In some parents’ views, the police action was excessive. One parent, Carolyn Thomas, commented on Facebook, asserting there wasn’t a fight and questioning the justification behind the police response, which felt unwarranted to her. She noted, “It seemed like a sudden decision from the authorities, leaving us in disbelief.”

Meanwhile, other players who weren’t directly sprayed reported discomfort and struggled with breathing. Following the disappointing loss, the team left the field in tears, highlighting the emotional toll of the incident.

The Massillon Police Department later defended its officers, explaining they attempted to separate the players and staff amid chaos. They stated that multiple commands were given to the Cardinal Ritter players to vacate the field, which went unheeded. Ultimately, the police concluded that using pepper spray was within their protocol during the situation.

Cardinal Ritter Preparatory School has since labeled the incident as unacceptable and criticized Washington High School for not being cooperative in seeking answers. President Tamiko Armstead noted that a formal complaint had been lodged with local law enforcement, expressing concern over the apparent lack of support from the opposing school’s administration.
