Injury Update on Polish Speed Skater Camila Selye
Polish speed skater Camila Selye is maintaining a hopeful outlook following a significant injury during the Olympics.
After being stretchered off the ice, Selye, who was injured in the face, shared a photo from the hospital, assuring everyone that she was “okay” despite the circumstances.
The 25-year-old athlete underwent surgery, as reported.
On Instagram, she expressed optimism, stating, “One day I’ll look at this photo and remember that I’m stronger than I ever believed. Thank you so much for all the words of support; I just wanted to let you know that I’m very okay.”
The incident occurred during the women’s 1,500-meter quarterfinals, where Selye suffered a severe injury when American skater Kristen Santos-Griwald’s skate became entangled with Italy’s Ariana Fontana, resulting in a direct hit to Selye’s face.
Santos-Griwald faced penalties for an illegal lane change during that chaotic moment.
Immediately after the injury, Selye began bleeding, leading to a postponement of the race as she received treatment under a large white sheet. Eventually, she was seen giving a thumbs up to the audience while being carried off on a stretcher.
Initially treated at an ice skating facility in Milan, Selye later went to the hospital, where scans revealed a minor fracture. A source from the Polish team confirmed her surgery and stated that she is currently in good health.
According to a team spokesperson, further tests are pending to assess any potential impact on her eyesight. It appears Selye’s cheekbone may have sustained damage as well.

After the incident, Selye remained conscious, but her cheek was visibly cut and swollen. Her recovery from surgery was marked by significant swelling.
Dr. Hubert Krystofiak, the medical director, mentioned that Selye had undergone an eye movement test, with initial results appearing satisfactory. This was a crucial factor for her recovery.
Unfortunately, due to her injury, Selye was unable to participate further in the event, while Santos-Griwald’s resulting penalty kept her off the track as well. Fontana, in the meantime, finished in fifth place.
