Speed Skater Camila Selye Injured in Olympic Race
During the 1,500-meter race at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, Polish speed skater Camila Selye sustained an injury above her left eye when struck by another competitor’s blade.
As Selye fell behind American skater Kristen Santos-Griwald on the short track, the incident occurred, with the blade making contact near Selye’s eye. Both athletes collided and hit the wall, but Selye remained still as medical personnel rushed to assist her.
Although the scene was alarming, Selye eventually gave a thumbs up while being taken away on a stretcher. Polish officials later confirmed that her eye was unharmed, and she received stitches at the venue before being transported to the hospital for additional examination.
On social media, Selye shared a selfie, stating, “I’m totally fine,” while shielding the side of her face where the injury occurred. She expressed gratitude for the support and reassured everyone regarding her well-being.
It was noted that Santos-Griwald later faced a penalty for making an illegal pass that contributed to the accident. The 25-year-old had been aiming for her first Olympic medal, having previously won silver and bronze at the World Championships in Beijing.
As of now, the Polish team is anxiously awaiting updates about any potential damage to Selye’s eyes.
