Political Corruption in the US Shows Its True Colors and Hits Americans Hard: Crypto Edition

On Wednesday, two reports shed light on the disconnect of America’s politicians from everyday citizens, revealing an unsettling confidence in their actions, despite the evident struggles of the public.

While many Americans are dealing with soaring diesel prices and rising grocery costs, Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand seems preoccupied in Washington, catering to the crypto lobby and seemingly ignoring her staff’s attempts to profit from their affiliation with her, the prominent senator from New York.

A feature from New York Magazine highlighted Gillibrand’s role as a key pro-crypto advocate, where she regularly collaborates with Republicans on favorable cryptocurrency legislation, notably sponsoring the bipartisan GENIUS Act. The article included some concerning details flagged by Nick Cleveland-Stout from Responsible Statecraft.

According to NYMag, just days before Gillibrand introduced a bill aimed at easing regulations for Bitcoin and Ether under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, her communications director reportedly acquired up to $30,000 worth of those cryptocurrencies.

Additionally, Gillibrand’s chief of staff appeared to leverage her position as a prominent fundraiser within the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, actively seeking support from other Democratic aides for her pro-crypto initiatives, as reported by NYMag.

Moreover, her 22-year-old son, Theodore, received $30 million in investment for his startup, backed by notable crypto investors, including a key donor to Gillibrand. Although this venture made news earlier, the connection to a Gillibrand donor had not been disclosed before.

When NYMag inquired about her staff engaging in cryptocurrency trading, Gillibrand brushed it off, stating, “I could care less what they do with their money. This is not a nanny state.”

In related crypto news, CBS shared insights on Donald Trump’s upcoming gala centered around a meme coin. To attend this exclusive event at Trump National Golf Club in November, one must be among the top 185 holders of the controversial $TRUMP meme coin. Notably, more than half of the 100 public crypto wallets involved have engaged with exchanges inaccessible to U.S. citizens, suggesting many may be foreign investors.

Zach Everson, a researcher with the progressive group Public Citizen, commented, “Foreign actors used to need a back door to try to influence a president. Trump is holding the front door open and inviting them in for a steak dinner.”

It raises questions, doesn’t it? Is Trump essentially selling access to a dinner through this dubious meme coin?

What we’re witnessing is America’s political elite actively exploiting the nation, while numerous citizens struggle. In a rational world, there would be swift repercussions for such behavior, but this isn’t a rational world. It’s a bizarre reality where insider trading is common, a sitting president blatantly capitalizes on foreign access, and diesel prices soar to $6 a gallon.
