Canadian Politician Faces Backlash Over Comments During Mexican Violence

The situation in Mexico is tense following the death of a prominent drug cartel leader, leading to a controversial response from some Canadian politicians.

Puerto Vallarta saw significant unrest after authorities announced the demise of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, a major figure in the criminal underworld, during a military operation in Jalisco state.

While many lawmakers have voiced concerns for Canadians in danger, Congresswoman Heather McPherson took a different approach, focusing her remarks on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. She stated, “Many Canadians, particularly members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, are in Puerto Vallarta, where violence is rapidly escalating. Shelter-in-place orders are in effect,” in a social media post.

McPherson urged caution and recommended following the Government of Canada’s advisory for travel to Mexico.

The 2SLGBTQIA+ acronym stands for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual individuals.

Critics online highlighted the inappropriateness of her focus on gender identity at such a perilous time for all citizens. One journalist sarcastically asked, “Can we meet with Mexican cartel terror groups and pressure them to include 2SLGBTQIA+?”

Another pointedly questioned why she would emphasize the safety of this particular group over others, suggesting it may have political motivations. Comments emerged like “Not progressive enough!” and “I believe the cartels have the proper DEI training to respond appropriately,” shared as a joke by an activist.

Responses reflected frustration, with one user arguing that the focus should be on all Albertans in danger, not just a select group. “This is not the time for politics,” one remark read.

Oseguera Cervantes led a powerful cartel operation specializing in drug trafficking and other illegal activities. His death has created a situation that many believe will lead to more violence and instability as rival factions vie for power.
