Poll expert dumps cold water on Democrats’ enthusiasm for Kamala Harris — and it’s all good news for Trump

President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the Democratic presidential nomination after it became clear within his party that he would lose to Donald Trump in November’s presidential election.

But will Vice President Kamala Harris leading the field improve the Democrats’ performance? According to CNN pollster Harry Enten, Harris’ addition likely won’t improve the Democrats’ performance.

“Kamala Harris is going to have to do better than this if she wants to win the popular vote.”

“Despite Democrats’ excitement about Kamala Harris, she’s going to have a hard time beating Donald Trump,” Enten explained Tuesday.

Enten’s reasons for tempering expectations are clear: He pointed to recent polls examining Trump’s popularity and acknowledged that he has been “historically unpopular,” but explained that the tide is turning rapidly in Trump’s favor.

“The fact is, Donald Trump is more popular right now than he’s ever been. So, Democrats can certainly make this swap, but they still have to defeat Donald Trump. A stronger Donald Trump than he’s ever been,” Enten said.

Not only is Trump’s favorability rating increasing, he also maintains a slight lead over Harris nationally.

But this narrow margin is misleading because the president is chosen by the Electoral College, and this number is a measure of voter sentiment (similar to the popular vote), meaning Democrats would need a significant polling advantage over Trump to feel confident of their chances on Election Day.

But the problem for Democrats is that “right now Donald Trump has a five-point advantage over Joe Biden than he did four years ago,” Enten explained.

“If Kamala Harris wants to win the popular vote, she’s going to have to do better than this, but even more than that, if she wants to win the Electoral College, she’s going to have to do better than she did nationally, because if there’s a tie in the national popular vote, that’s not going to be enough for Kamala Harris,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harris’ campaign argues that she will have great support among younger voters.

But that’s not true: In fact, Harris’ approval rating against Trump among younger voters is “much worse” than Biden’s, Enten said Wednesday.

Democrats undoubtedly have a lot of work to do.

Harris is a far-left Democrat who not only has less appeal to moderate voters, but also faces a growing number of historically Democratic voters who are switching to Republicans, including younger voters. According to Entenand Black and Hispanic Voters.
