2025 NYC Mayoral Race Tightens
The contest for New York City’s mayor is intensifying, with Andrew Cuomo’s lead dwindling just days before the pivotal Democratic primary on June 24. According to a recent poll from the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, Cuomo is backed by 38% of likely Democratic voters.
Since resigning in 2021 over various scandals, Cuomo is now focused on revamping his image and staging a political comeback. Following him in the polls is Zorhan Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, who garnered 27% support. The poll is based on a ranked-choice voting system, which allows voters to rank their preferred candidates.
Mamdani, originally from Uganda, has significantly reduced Cuomo’s lead. A previous poll, conducted about a month ago, showed how progressive support is shifting in key areas. Notable backing for Mamdani has come from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, aiming to unify progressive voters behind him.
“Mamdani is certainly closing in on Cuomo,” remarked Lee M. Millingoff, the polling director from Marist.
It’s worth noting that New York City Director Brad Lander is far behind in third place. The survey was conducted before the final debates and just prior to Lander’s unexpected arrest by Homeland Security on Tuesday.
In Cuomos’ campaign ads, he’s highlighting Mamdani’s lack of experience, criticizing him as an inexperienced lawmaker who has only passed a few bills. The ads draw stark comparisons, emphasizing Cuomo’s leadership during crises like the pandemic.
Cuomo’s team believes their campaign strategy is proving effective. His spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, mentioned that recent polls show him maintaining a healthy lead in a competitive field.
Cuomo, now 67, has been working hard to clear his name, combating allegations related to sexual harassment and scrutiny over his handling of COVID-19 during his tenure as governor.
Recently, the Justice Department began a criminal investigation into Cuomo, linked to accusations related to his response to the pandemic.
As of now, over 130,000 Democrats have already cast their votes in the primary ahead of next Tuesday’s election. The winner of this primary is generally seen as the frontrunner for the general election in this predominantly Democratic city.
This upcoming general election, however, might be more unpredictable than usual. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a moderate, is seeking reelection as an independent after dropping plans for a major Democratic run amid declining approval ratings.
Interestingly, while former President Donald Trump’s recent actions have stirred a dialogue among candidates, he is not directly involved in the vote. Candidates, including Cuomo, have criticized Trump’s immigration policies, vowing to protect the city from potential federal crackdowns.
